sma | स्म |, smā | स्मा |, (or śma | श्म |, śmā | श्मा |), ind. a particle perhaps originally equivalent to ‘ever’, ‘always’; and later to ‘indeed’, ‘certainly’, ‘verily’, ‘surely’ (it is often used pleonastically, and in earlier language generally follows a similar particle [esp. ha | ह |, na | न |], or relative, or prep. or verb, while in later language it frequently follows iti | इति |, na | न | and mā/ | मा/ | [cf. 1. mā/ | मा/ |]; it is also joined with a pres. tense or pres. participle to give them a past sense [e.g. praviṣanti sma | प्रविषन्ति स्म |, ‘they entered’]; this use of sma | स्म | is also found in the Brāhmaṇas and is extended to veda | वेद | and āha | आह | cf. Vām. v, 2, 46), RV.; &c. &c.
